With P. Sainath, Magsaysay Prize winner

P. Sainath is an Indian journalist and a professor of journalism who focuses on inequality and poverty. The Nobel laureate, Professor Amartya Sen, has called him “one of the world’s great experts on famine and hunger.” In September 2021, he was given the Fukuoka Grand Prize, one of Japan’s top international awards. Sainath was McGraw Professor of Writing at Princeton University in Fall 2012 and has been conferred doctorates by the University of Alberta at Edmonton (2011) and the St. Francis Xavier University (2017). In India, he has taught journalism for 36 years. In 2014, Sainath launched the People’s Archive of Rural India (PARI), a multimedia digital platform creating a unique database on rural life in India. His book, Everybody Loves a Good Drought, on rural poverty was declared a Penguin Classic in 2013. His more recent book, The Last Heroes: Foot Soldiers of Indian Freedom, published in seven languages, is on India’s anti-colonial freedom struggle.
